Day trippin' to Trzic
Whitney and I spread our wings a bit this past week. On Wednesday morning we were picked up by the friendly Tomas. He is an ER doc and had just gotten off an overnight shift, though he seemed no worse the wear for it amazingly. He drove us about 40 minutes north of Ljubljana to the small old industrial mountain town of Trzic. At the confluence of two rivers, massive Yugoslavian shoe and textile factories used hydropower to power production machines. Those factories have long been shuttered as modern markets have shifted and the Slovene economy has adapted to life outside of Yugoslavia. Now, the town is working to find a new identity. Fortunately, the surrounding environs are stunning with a diverse array of mountains rising out of the valley floors. On the other side of one particularly stunning massif is Austria. Neat!
Upon our arrival, we rested for a bit in my Slovene host, Irena's house. She made sure we had lots of tasty snacks before we set out on a pretty rugged hike. The town of Trzic, and Ljubljana for that matter, had been deluged by rainstorms for the previous 4-5 days. Apparently, the road to two small villages up above Trzic had been washed out when the nearby river had swollen in the storms. We were going to access those villages via a mountain trail to see what their condition was and then, hopefully, hike out on what was left of the road. Here are some pics from the hike:
Eventually, we did reach the area that had been hit hardest by the floodwaters. Though the houses and people seemed fine, the road had been undercut badly in several places. Check it out here:
Pretty gnarly! Although the damage was sad to see, we really liked Trzic. I think we will go back soon. We may even try to live there for a bit next summer. All in good time.
